The folk-tales in this book were collected in the Philippines during the years from 1908 to 1914. Philippine lies at the very doors of China and Japan and is connect-ed ethnically with the Malayan and Indian civilizations. This geographical characteristic of the country highly affected its traditions and way of living very much. Phillippine's culture and tradition also changed dramatically with the coming of the Spaniard in the sixteenth century. The Spaniard brought with itself the mediaeval flavor and setting of chivalry and stories of wars between Christians and Saracens in Europe and affected the very nature of pure Filipino Tales. One result of this historical situation was that native traditional tales of Phillipines began to have a general tendency to take the color of the Spanish romances and chivalric narrations.
